A Depression Awareness Dance Photo Shoot | Robin Rogers Photography

by Guest Contributor Robin Rogers of Robin Rogers Photography

I sat here with a blank screen for days. The right words to express the impact this shoot had on me were nowhere to be found. So, I am just going to speak from my heart. My hope is you can all follow along, and take a piece of this with you.

I have suffered from depression a large portion of my life. I can sit here and give the story of the not great childhood, the abusive relationships, or the harsh lifestyle that I got into. However, at the end of the day, it doesn’t change the bottom line. Depression is hard. Depression sucks. Depression sucks the life right out of you. Today I have a family, a husband, three children, and a career. Those things don’t change that still existing depressive state. It effects so many of us no matter what your lifestyle.

You always hear that there are all of these outlets to get help. The reality is this that when you are depressed you are stuck in this hole. A hole that you feel nobody can understand. You are standing at the bottom looking up at the rest of the world passing you by. You want to reach a hand out, but something inside of you tells you not to. You don’t feel worthy of the attention. You don’t see or feel the love of those around you. You sit alone. Some days you start to feel like you will never feel joy, or love, or happiness again. You blame yourself.

I don’t know if I will ever fully kick depression, so many things in my life have been dark. I think its hard to overcome those things. I go to therapy weekly, and we talk about those demons. I am on depression and anxiety meds. The meds help mask the overwhelming physical ailments that accompany depression and anxiety. At the end of each day though, whether forefront, or back burner, they still exist. They are part of me make me who I am today.

I am finally opening up to a place where I can turn these feelings into my own art form through my camera. I recently read an article about Andrea Barber (AKA Kimmy Gibler). She found her serenity through running. The article was inspiring. It was so wonderful to hear that someone felt the same way as me and wasn’t ashamed to publish it. (check out the article from INStyle. I highly recommend it!)

I have a group of 7 dancers which I hand selected for this shoot. They each brought a piece to the shoot that I found magic in them. Although your life has been so shortly lived, Julia, Cameron, Kali, Lorelei, Sam, Nick, Grace, I draw so much inspiration from you all. You took my vision and boosted it to the highest. While shooting, it was hard not to get overly emotional because I played my role through Julia, the black. Sitting in a room full of friends, yet alone. Each shot is a direct reflection and play on me. It was so wonderful to open myself up into this shoot. Shooting is my outlet. Without my camera, I don’t know if I would have ever made it to where I am today. The gift of art is therapy in its own way. It’s raw—its me. Use your art! No matter what it is. Use it to create, inspire, and SAVE A LIFE.

If you are suffering from depression, anxiety, or feeling suicidal, PLEASE through the pain know that there are others out there that hurt, too. You are NOT alone. Please seek help. We want you all here on Earth with us, healthy and beautiful. If you have a friend that needs help, HELP! If you can’t, get them help. My email is always open, send away. I am here. Call the National Suicide Prevention Line. 24/7 there IS someone to talk to! 1-800-273-8255. It’s for EVERYONE! I’ve called, its pain free, I promise. We want you here. It’s not worth it to deprive the world of all your amazing.

A Whimsical Dance Shoot

by Guest Contributor Robin Rogers of Robin Rogers Photography

Pretty Forum Photography Dance Photography

To look around this beautiful world we live in, there is so much inspiration to pull from. Before pulling at the heart strings, I have to credit some amazing vendors that have so much to this shoot! Costumes came from Weissman’s, Costume Gallery, Just Couture and stunning head tie backs from Raven Boutique.

Yowell Ranch in Killeen TX, opened up their property for our shoot, and there couldn’t have been a better backdrop! The perfect lighting, a field of gorgeous wildflowers, gave the perfect backdrop for our old farm style bed frame wrapped with garland. 19 dancers took part in this shoot, from Houston to Waco. By far the largest group I have worked with, as my own styled dancer shoot. Never would it have been possible without the help of some awesome dance teachers and choreographers. So to Alyssa Alvarez, Lauren Morgan and Sarah Yowell, more thank you’s that I could ever provide!

My dance photoshoots are a direct reflection of a feeling I have inside me. For the first time, I can openly admit that I suffer from Depression and Anxiety. My creativity that I pull for my dancers, is a piece of me. Each and every one. Channeling mental illnesses through other outlets really does make the days and hard pieces so much easier. Sometimes our minds are just jumbled and scary and we can’t figure it out. I have found that these stunning dancers allowing me to create such a beautiful piece of art, with them, gives me serenity (which is something I could never thank them for enough). In essence these sessions, save a piece of me. How do you thank someone for that?

This shoot, I classified as Whimsical. However, looking at it, its more of a reflection of the love I have. My children give me such love that words couldn’t possible describe it. This shoot is full of connected movements, lifts, all things we need to carry each other. My children carry me through some of the tough points in my life. We all need to lean on each other to get through life. “I just want to be someone, to mean something to anyone…” ― Charlotte Eriksson I think this is how we all feel.

Sometimes we need others to lift us up, when life has us down. I sometimes have a hard time seeing it, but I am blessed. Beyond measure. Friends, the beautiful family I have created, and this passion with my camera that I get to use to put my emotions in front of it. Thank you for allowing me to show a piece of me. I am honored to be a guest contributor. I am humbled and still looking for the reasoning behind how I am here amongst so many stunning photographers.

Pretty Forum for PHotographers

I have to thank the models that never once doubted my idea, did each and every crazy idea we had: Julie, Saraya, Hope, Celeste, Kierra, Lorelei, Jayli, Malloree, Sam, Grace, Maggie, Kendall, Kara, Naveah, Emilee, Keelin, Hannah, Cathy and Addison. All of you, brought not just my vision to life, but a piece of me. Your grace, beauty, and dignity shined in each movement you took. Thank you to each of you, and my hope is, you see that you lean on each other to find your strengths, and new found friendships will stay with you.

Love of Lifestyle: The Fundamentals of Lifestyle Photography

If there’s one thing we can all most likely agree on as parents, it’s that our kids grow up way too fast! Childhood goes by in the blink of an eye (well, for adults it does, kids probably think it creeps by pretty darn slowly!).  And when our kids’ childhoods are truly a thing of the past for all of us, we have memories in our hearts and in our minds to hold onto, and the majority of us probably have countless pictures to bring those childhood moments right to the forefront of our minds once again as well. Now think about this, wouldn’t it be amazing if those pictures were created in the most beautiful and meaningful ways possible?  What a gift it would be to our kids, to our families, and to our clients and their families to be able to document life in a way that truly displays beauty in ordinary, everyday moments.

Love of Lifestyle, a four-week online workshop, explores concepts that will allow you to do just that. Taught by Ashley Spaulding, Love of Lifestyle will help you discover how to make the most of the environment around you to craft lifestyle images that will be treasured for years to come. Let Them Eat Cake—A Marie Antoinette Inspired Shoot

by Guest Contributor Robin Rogers of Robin Rogers Photography

Pretty Forum for Photographers

I’ve always drawn inspiration from my life experiences. Sometimes we find inspiration in places that we don’t seem to think. Of course, I draw love and inspiration from my family. My 3 children, my loving husband, the crazy chocolate lab that has run our lives for 2 years. However sometimes, we have to let the other pieces of us shine into our work too. Life sometimes hands us lemons and lemonade. I think we need to capture both!

I am eternally grateful for everything falling into perfect place to bring this shoot to life. It’s the perfect mix of my todays and my yesterdays. The beauty and grace of the dancers, their movements and showing of love, is the perfect example of how I am in my today.  The dark controversy that is Marie Antoinette, I think is the perfect flow of my yesterdays. We all have to climb mountains to be who we are today. I am proud of climbing all of chose mountains, and finding the person I am today and capturing it.

Photography Forum for Photographers

Pretty Forum for Photographers

A modern take on Marie Antionette, Let them eat cake. Marie Antionette lived a lavish lifestyle. With her famous line “Let them eat cake”, I found the inspiration for this shoot. Possibly misunderstood? Possibly as terrible in ways that history describes her, either way, you can’t help but find the stories surrounding her to be interesting, to say the least.

Months of planning went into creating this styled session. The process leading up to the shoot is equally as important as the session. The time I put into planning a styled shoot is a chance for me to open up my creativity, and soul into what I am doing. Sometimes as photographers we tend to get “stale” in our styles. Shooting what is safe, the style that we are adapted to as our own. We all need a time and a chance co jump out of the norm.

Over 3 months time, I gathered costumes and pieces from so many different places. Some costumes came from Amazon, while my favorite piece came from the loveliest of vintage shops located in Brooklyn, NY called Lulaverse Vintage. Hair and Make-up were the center of this shoot, and what really brought my models to life! Katy Reddell Beauty single handed brought all 7 of these models to the exact inspiration in my mind. She is AMAZING!

I am mostly a self-taught photographer. Taking a few classes and mentorships along the way. Every time I pick up my camera, it’s a new learning experience. There is always a new way to manipulate light, use shadows for drama, create depth. I love trying something new. This shoot was something very new for me, with a variety of different lighting variances. Shot with my Canon 50 Mark III, and rotating between my 85mm 1.2 and 40mm pancake (its such a fun lens!).

On this photography journey I have learned a few things, however the biggest lesson I have learned; never fear putting all of yourself into your projects. The inspiration you pull you should always put in your work. It is what makes it unique, that is where your style as a photographer really comes from.

I have co thank all of the vendors that contributed to this fun shoot: La Rio Mansion, Lily’s Cakes, Katy Reddell Beauty, Lulaverse Vintage, Raven Boutique Models: Miranda, Emilee, Keelin, Kensley, Charlotte, Pyper and Maddie

Tips to Keep Your Images Interesting in Limited Surroundings

Do you feel like you are shooting in the same spaces all the time?

In January of this year I started shooting a 365 project. I knew it was going to be a difficult project to tackle because picking up my camera every day and finding inspiration can be tough. My main subject for my photography is my family and our everyday life, and I quickly realized that I was going to be shooting in a lot of the same spaces over and over again. The challenge to keep those spaces interesting without taking the same image repeatedly hit me very early in the project.

This is my backyard. It’s not much bigger than a postage stamp and I do a lot of shooting out here. These are just phone snaps to give you an idea what it looks like.

I have a full-time job outside of the home. There have been many days after work when I’ve realized I haven’t taken my image yet for the day. So I’ll ask one or both of my boys to come out to the backyard and play. Finding a new perspective, whether it is on their play set or anywhere in the yard, has become a personal challenge I assigned myself. The questions I ask myself when we go play in the yard are: How can I move beyond the traditional ‘kid on a swing’ shot? How can I use the light to my advantage to make an image more interesting? Can I get more creative with my settings by doing slow shutter or high ISO?

This day, I climbed up the play set and looked down.  I also climbed the stairs and hung off the edge.

I looked up and down the slide.

Sometimes it has been such a long day at work that I am too tired to stand and shoot, so I lay on the ground. And hope that I didn’t just lie in a fire ant pile.

Finally, bear in mind that just because a shot didn’t work the first time it’s not a failure: You can always come back to the idea and try again!

See this shot?

I had a vision for this swing shot with the sun in just the right place, and it took me over a week to perfect it. It’s okay to keep playing with one shot until you get just what you want.

It’s easy to feel limited by the surroundings we see everyday, but just keep pushing yourself to try something new. Over time I’ve realized that one small area can provide so many different images if I change my perspective and vary the light. What perspective have you not tried yet? Have you shot in full sun? Tried backlight or shooting at night? Have you tried a different type of lens or different settings? Most importantly, it’s okay if your first attempt doesn’t result in something amazing – you might find something wonderful and unexpected if you just keep experimenting.
