Project 366: Photo Inspiration

Summer is officially here and we are almost to the halfway point in our Project 365! Can you believe that?! You’ve made it this far! This is a great time to look back on all you have accomplished and how much you have grown. Are you a better photographer than when you first started? Have you become a better storyteller? Have you developed and owned your own style? More importantly, look back on all the memories you have captured so far that you will be able to cherish forever. Be encouraged by all that you have accomplished up to this point and look forward to what the next half holds!

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”  Proverbs 22:6

Over the last several weeks I have noticed more images from our participants whose children are developing an interest in photography.  It’s exciting to share with and teach the next generation but it’s also very sweet to see these youngsters with a camera in hand; trying to be just like the family photographer.  Childhood, like so many moments in life, is fleeting.  I’m so proud of our participants for capturing the details of life and for sharing their passion with the next generation.  Enjoy this week’s featured images and come see us in the forum.

Every day may not be good but there is something good in everyday…

Have you noticed how your 365 Project has allowed you to see the good even in the bad days? We are almost halfway through the year and there is no doubt that all of us have had difficult days already in 2016. Our 365 projects should be an accurate reflection of our lives (the good and the bad) but they can also help us to focus on all the good in life rather than the negative. Even when we capture the pain, the tantrums, the loss, the chaos… We can look back and possibly laugh or smile now at a horrible day or a painful moment in time that has long passed. We can capture the rainbow at the end of the storm. Here are some of our favorites captured from this month so far:

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”
— Aaron Siskind

We have completed just over a third of this year’s Pretty 366 challenge and there are so many moments and memories our members will cherish long after this project comes to an end.  It feels daunting to accept the challenge of picking up a camera and shooting every day for a year, but when you break it down into days, weeks, and months… the time can pass quickly and you suddenly have a body of work that you might not have had otherwise.  As always, there is a great deal of daily inspiration over in the forum.  Moments with parents, children, friends, nature, and the ordinary objects one finds in life.  Our members have stretched and pushed themselves to be creative with composition as well as being ready to capture moments on the fly.   We have had new members join us and we are excited to welcome them to the project.

For those of you participating in Project 366, take a few minutes to review the past few months of work and give yourself a pat on the back!  Also, I challenge you to choose one image from the 122 images you have for the year, print it, and place it in a space where you see it on a daily basis.  Let this image serve as a reminder of why you are doing the project and let it inspire you!

Here’s a sampling of inspiration from the forum.  Remember, have fun and keep shooting.

“When people look at my pictures I want them to feel the way they do when they want to read a line of a poem twice.” ― Robert Frank

This 365 Project has the potential to turn you each into great storytellers. Anyone can take a picture, but to be able to convey a story without words in your images is truly a gift worth striving for. In attempting this challenge of taking a picture a day, I’m sure you’ve noticed how your eye has become more tuned into to what is going on in the day. You know that moment when your eyes light up and you see it… that image that represents your story for this particular day in 2016.

So many elements contribute to storytelling through your photography. Things like the environment, composition (what is the eye drawn to in the shot), emotion, etc. Let there be days where you try to document the little details that sometimes get overlooked. Try not to get caught up in the “What am I going to take a picture of today?” anxiety but rather be patient and simply wait for it… that organic moment that is screaming to be written down in jpeg form. How are you telling a story in your daily 365 project?

Photographer Spotlight

Photographer Spotlight: Rachel Meagan Photography

We are so excited to welcome the wonderfully talented Rachel Meagan to the Blog! Take a moment to learn more about her beautiful wedding photography, and be sure to visit her website Rachel Meagan Photography. Thank you so much Rachel for taking the time to share your work with us today!

Where did your inspiration for photography begin?
My inspiration for photography began when I was 12 years old. I was at my babysitter’s wedding in Southern California, and just remember watching her photographers the entire day. Following them around like a puppy, completely amazed by them and what they were doing. I just knew that THIS was what I wanted to do. But I let that passion sit and stir inside of me for 3 years, when I officially started my business at 15.5.

How would you describe your photography style?
If I had to describe my photography with 3 words, I would use the words raw, organic, and real. I strive to create images for my clients that not only I’m proud of, but that they will enjoy for years to come. I create natural poses, and capture real emotion.

Did you study photography in school or are you self taught?
I’m completely self-taught. I learned all of the ins-and-outs of the technical side of photography by just going out and shooting, as well as doing LOTS of research online through articles I found on google!

What brand/model camera do you shoot, and what is your favorite lens?
I currently shoot with a Canon 5D Mark iii. And my all-time favorite lens is my canon 50mm 1.4. This lens is and always will be my favorite workhorse. I’ve had this lens the longest throughout my career, and it hardly ever comes off my camera!!

Do you have any tips for photographers on how to find the light?
When shooting sessions, I prefer to only shoot at sunset or sunrise. There’s something about that yummy golden light that just makes my heart happy. I think that if you can learn how to master backlighting with direct sunset lighting. Then you’ll be ready to tackle finding more light. Now, this isn’t always the norm, especially when shooting weddings!! But there is SO much you can do with one little window — giving you the best light you could ever imagine.

What is the most challenging thing about photographing weddings?
I think the most challenging thing about shooting weddings is the constant back and forth to different lighting situations, and keeping a consistent white balance. It’s SO crucial to know your settings like the back of your hand and be able to change back and forth quickly.

What is a good lesson you have learned this year in photography or in your business?
That there needs to be a healthy balance between work and having a life. Being a small business owner often means missing out on life’s moments because we’re working crazy hours. I’ve learned SO much this year that it’s okay to take a break and enjoy life sometimes. Work will always be there. I’ve also learned that organization is key. From having a good filing system on your computer, to keep track of my schedule well has kept me sane this year.

If you could encourage a new photographer in one area, what would it be?
It’s SO easy to get caught up in looking at more seasoned photographers work and get discouraged by their work. But I encourage you to just get out there and SHOOT. You’re not gonna grow if you stop shooting. So learn new things, try new techniques!! Heck, take wicked awesome iPhone pictures and create an awesome instagram feed. Just keep shooting.

What do you love most about being a photographer?
Honestly, my favorite part about being a photographer is getting to love on my clients through my images. As a wedding photographer, I get to be a part of one of the greatest seasons in my couples lives and capture some of their most cherished moments. It brings me SUCH great joy to capture these moments in a raw and real way. I love being able to meet the tons of new people I get to come in contact with through my photography, and travel all across the country meeting even more people!! I truly do love what I do with every ounce of my being.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I would LOVE to be a worldwide wedding photographer who travels all the time visiting crazy locations. Capturing the world as I see it, and getting to shoot amazing couples in the process!! I would love to teach workshops, and create an experience for my clients that is so unique that it’s sought after.

Inspiration.  Something that makes someone want to do something or that gives someone an idea about what to do or create : a force or influence that inspires someone.  Merriam-Webster.

Inspiration is all around us and for those who are following the journey of Project 365, you are sure to be inspired daily by the images being shared in the Pretty Forum.  Wonder.  Beauty.  Joy.  Tears.  Nature.  Humor.  Perseverance.  Inspiration is there in so many forms and it encourages, motivates, and challenges me to get out there with my camera and find the next spark of creativity.  Enjoy this diverse sampling of beauty found in the everyday moments that make up each and every life.  Inspire and be inspired.

Photographer Spotlight: Lea Hartman

We are so excited to welcome the super talented Lea Hartman to the Pretty Forum blog! Take a moment to learn more about her beautiful family and child photography and be sure to visit her website Lea Hartman Photography.  Thank you Lea for taking the time to share your work with us today!

Lea Hartman Photography North Carolina Photographer

Where did your inspiration for photography begin?

The first time I remember becoming interested in photography was during my short foray as a model back in my teen years. I was 17 and on a day long magazine shoot, honestly bored to death. I had been sitting around for hours while someone did my hair, makeup and dressed me, and then dressed me again. When I finally got in front of the camera, I distinctly remember being much more interested in what the photographer, Kurt Markus was doing than what I was doing. It was many years before I actively pursued photography but I have some prints from that shoot framed in my house to remind myself of that initial spark.

Lea Hartman Photography

How would you describe your photography style?

Clean, classic, and connected are my three branding words. I focus on genuine interactions and keep my editing pretty minimal. Most of the final images from my portrait or lifestyle sessions are in-between shots where my clients weren’t “ready” for the camera or didn’t even know I was shooting.

Lea Hartman Photography

Did you study photography in school or are you self taught?

I am completely self taught thanks to the internet and my young children who were too small to get away from my camera!

Lea Hartman Photography

What brand/model camera do you shoot, and what is your favorite lens?

Last year I switched from full frame to a cropped sensor and I haven’t regretted it once! I shoot primarily with a Fuji X-T1 and occasionally use my Canon 5D as a backup. I’m also old school and still shoot film with my Canon EOS 3 and my Canon AE-1. My favorite lens on my X-T1 is the 23mm f/1.4 (roughly a 35mm equivalent on a full frame).

Lea Hartman Photography

Do you have any tips for photographers on how to find the light?

I think finding good light is a learned skill. We have to train ourselves to recognize it. Nothing beats experience so I think the best way to do this is simply to take a lot of pictures. All the time, everywhere you go, with your DSLR, with your phone. Some will turn out great, some won’t, but eventually, you’ll find that you’re drawn to beautiful light. And then it’s like riding a bike…you never forget.

Lea Hartman Photography

What is your favorite subject to photograph?

Women, hands down. I’m getting teary eyed thinking about it because the world is just so mean. The standard of beauty that has been set for women is unrealistic and unattainable at best. It has crushed our spirit and made us doubt our worth. It breaks my heart, honestly, especially being the mother of a little girl. If I can use my talent and skill to create a portrait that makes a woman feel beautiful and radiant and comfortable in her own skin, that is the absolute highest compliment I could receive.

Lea Hartman Photography

What is a good lesson you have learned this year in photography or in your business?

You should never stop pushing yourself to learn something new and be more creative. Take a workshop, challenge yourself to begin a personal project, do something to continue to move forward. Yes, you may be on the right track already, but you’ll get run over if you just sit there.

Lea Hartman Photography

If you could encourage a new photographer in one area, what would it be?

Be patient with yourself. Trust me.

Lea Hartman Photography

What do you love most about being a photographer?

I most love the idea that I’m contributing to a historical record. That the images I capture will live longer than I will and that 100 years from now, someone will look back on my photographs the way I look back on photographs from days long past.

Lea Hartman Photography

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

As a military spouse, I have a hard time planning years in advance. I rarely see past our current duty station. The army has a habit of asking for things we hadn’t planned on giving and I prefer not to set myself up for disappointment. When my husband retires and we finally settle in one location, I would like to open a natural light studio. Five years ago that inability to make a plan and stick to it would really have bothered me but thanks to my awesome husband, I’m learning to roll with the punches.

Hi, I’m Lea! (Think Leah, but without the “h.”) I’m a self-taught natural light photographer based out of North Carolina. Though I have been told I should specialize in something, I photograph whatever interests me. I’ve tried to narrow it down but I get bored too fast. Lover Boy and I have been married for 14 years and are the proud parents of three crazy kids. I’ve yet to travel but dream of visiting the Mediterranean. I made sure to get a passport, just in case. I have a weakness for Vera Bradley and a full blown addiction to Jamberry. I believe that any time of the day is the perfect time for coffee and can’t resist buying a cute mug. I have too many. It’s becoming a problem. I hate mustard, washing dishes and anything low fat. I love dogs, movies and lemon flavored desserts. Yum.
